Employment Background
After graduating from Utica College in June 1984, I still had to complete my clinical rotation in Medical Lab Technology as well as prepare for the ASCP certification exam. I took the certification exam in August 1984, and passed with flying colors.
I was subsequently hired as a lab technologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital--Columbia Campus in December 1984.
During my tenure at NYPH, I held several positions--lab technologist, chief technologist, and assistant lab supervisor. I was making a decent salary, and I was basically content with my life.
My turning point came in August 2004 when I was downsized from my job as assistant lab supervisor. After getting over the initial shock and anger associated with losing my job, I had come to a crossroad of sorts--either find another job as a medical lab technologist, or consider a possible career change. I chose to persue a career change after being unsuccessful in finding another job as a lab technologist with similar job duties and salary.
